Born February 9, 1981 in Harlem New York. Moved to St. Thomas at a young age where she was raised and currently resides.
This singing songbird, Empress I was born into a family of musicians. Her mother Angela “Sister Anykka” Hodge, Father, Jomo Pemberton and her late stepfather Mahlon “Tanasha aka Beloved” Lindqvist are all recording artists. With that foundation being set, Empress I and her two brothers naturally gravitated towards the love of music. Her style of music cannot be placed into just one genre. You can say it’s a fusion of many genres ranging from Reggae, soul, neosoul, R&B and jazz. Empress I would always say that she feeds from all the greatest musicians that have ever lived! This is most evident because it transcends in her music. She was heavily influenced by her favorite artists such as Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Sam Cooke, Celia Cruz, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill and the list goes on!
As a singer, songwriter her music is about many of her life experiences, spirituality, love, relationships and the critical issues facing the black community.
Empress I has now released her debut single and music video “Jah Carry Me” taken from her EP entitled “Empress I Music”. The Song was written in 2014, recorded and produced in WMB Studios on St. Thomas. The video was filmed December 2014 and shot on location at a place called “Gozolandia” and Comerio, Bayamon in Puerto Rico. The reason she chose this song, was because she felt it was the most high’s calling to bless her on her journey through life and throughout her musical career as well.
In the beginning Empress I was very shy, now she is no stranger to the stage. She has performed in places like Colorado, Puerto Rico and recently in various places in her hometown St. Thomas USVI. She has worked on numerous occasions with the Virgin Islands very own reggae band “The Unity Band”.
Empress I has plenty more in store. She is dedicated to perfecting her craft and delivering more quality work to her fans near and afar all by the guidance of the most high JAH RASTAFARI. BLESS!
